Post-natal Care - Stutika Parichaya

POST NATAL CARE/ SUTIKA PARICHARYA

Since the fetus gets its nourishment from the mother’s body during pregnancy, her saptha dhatus decreases. After birth, the mother’s health weakens due to the loss of fluid and blood as well as the emptiness created in her body after the foetus is expelled. After delivery, the mother is called sutika, a term derived from prasuta, the mother’s postnatal period. A special regimen is prescribed for this period to compensate for the loss of fluids, dhathus, and blood during pregnancy and delivery. In Ayurveda, agni is low and vata is vitiated following delivery.
